# 1 Free Minesweeper
My review : The Game may be called #1 Free Minesweeper, but it is Mine sweeper on steroids.
WOW. The strategy is the same for those of you familiar with the game, but the special effects are not at all what Microsoft had in mind when they put the game on it's first version of Windows so long ago.
Off topic: Here's a bit of trivia for you. Did you know that the games Mine Sweeper and Solitaire were put on Windows to teach people how to use the mouse. Solitaire was to help people learn how to drag and drop and minesweeper for right and left clicking. The games were so popular though, that companies had to leave them off when they set up new computers. However as more and more people became computer savvy, they realized that the games were still hidden in the operating system and could be either added through the system setup or played by using their dos commands and running winmine.exe and sol.exe
What ??? You say you never did that? Right..... You just asked people like me to do it for you? Sure get us in trouble. so that's how you are.
Safety factor: Anyway this program is freeware and I found it while looking for games for my pocket PC. It does have to be installed, but is harmless. The company site does have more games and their EULA (You know the fine print nobody ever reads but us geeks.) is OK. The games they have there are pretty cool too but they are share ware. The cost is reasonable for what you are getting but too steep I think for a game ($19.95 for a solitaire suite. However you can get a demo for 30 days. I usually get bored before that anyway
The Strategy for mine sweeper can be a bit confusing if you've never played before. At first all you can do is randomly click squares until you get lucky and you hit one which uncovers a lot at once. The numbers on the square mean there is exactly that many bombs touching that square. So if the number was an 8 all the squares around it would be bombs and you should flag them all. If the number is a one and you can figure out or already know which one is the bomb, then you can safely click on all the other's surrounding the one. and so on.
What is so different about this version is
that when you do hit a bomb the special effects and sounds are
great. there are also effects when you expose a square that
leads to a bunch of others uncovering themselves.
If you look at this sample screen shot of the game you can see the red highlighted bomb. the 2 directly below it illustrates that there are just 2 bombs on each side. And in the upper right corner. If faced with a situation with the 3 ones in that position we would know there would be a bomb in the corner since all of the spots surrounding the inner most one had been exposed.
I didn't get any viruses or spyware downloading and installing this game. That doesn't usually happen when someone gives a game out as advertising to get you to check out the other commercial games they make. So check it our, but as always, continue to scan your machine with the products I told you about in the computer section. There are some new ones out too so I will be updating it as so as I can. Have fun.
