Words Words Words
Words are fun. Not only do they allow us to communicate with each other, tell jokes and stories and of course pray, but they make me laugh all the time. My tongue is constantly tripping over my eye teeth and I can't see what I am saying. Even the words that describe the funny words are funny sounding themselves. there are synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, homophones, and then there are Palindromes, Spoonerisms and my favorite mur-mur diphthongs. My daughter's favorite is onomatopoeia. Yes that is a real word And you are going to get to find out about all of them. Boy are you going to be able to impress your teachers, friends and parents. And they said that all you were going to do is ruin your health in front of your computer.
So check out the first one on Palindromes. Here's a little bit of trivia for you. Did you know that Weird Al Yankovich wrote an entire song that is a palindrome.. It's true, but you would expect something like that out of Al.
Wow!! I discovered a great web site called Fun with Words. Actually my daughter Katie did. You could spend hours there. Some of the pages are just weird Ok like the different ways to group letters. For instance those with no endpoint like O. But some pages really fascinated me and taught me things I never knew. Did you know that some words are their own antonyms (opposites)? One example given was bolt (to secure or to run away) Check it out.
I found this typing program after a request from another computer teacher. It's free and once you open it, you can disconnect from the internet . Handy if you are on a dial up connection. so go work on those typing skills.
Magnetic Poetry-- Now this can be fun. Did you ever have any word magnets up on the fridge or sent messages to someone on a dry erase board there? At our house the fridge is the main communication center. Well that's what the magnetic poetry section is. Just move those magnets around and make up silly phrases, or leave cryptic notes to a friend using a code or maybe just stick them in a certain part of the "fridge door".
